Working with AI Agents: Productivity with Integrity
AI is continuously changing how research gets done. In particular, increasingly autonomous capabilities (agentic AI) are being built into the LLM-based tools many researchers already use. These agents offer powerful ways to speed up parts of the research process: they can search the literature, write and run analysis code, and draft text based on collections of documents. In this hands-on workshop, you will experience the power of AI agents and discuss how to use them responsibly by being the accountable expert human in the loop.
In a mix of short inputs and practical work, you will:

understand what AI agents are and how they are transforming research

put agentic tools to the test yourself by using readily available AI agent platforms (such as ChatGPT Work and Claude Cowork) and critically evaluate their output

find out about value-based principles of research integrity and reflect on how they translate to working with AI agents responsibly

work in a team to build a strategy to instruct agents for a concrete use case and verify their work

take away tested prompts and agent instructions you can adapt for your own work
About you
This workshop is for you if you are an active researcher (PhD student, postdoc, or PI) who wants to get more out of AI than question-answering, and cares about doing so without compromising your scientific standards. You do not need any coding experience or technical background.
It is probably not for you if you are looking for deep technical training in building AI systems from scratch.
What we expect from you:
· a laptop with a working Zoom instance, camera and microphone
· willingness to experiment, share screens, and work in small groups
· an account with at least one agentic AI platform, set up before the workshop
About your trainer
Dr. Ilona Lipp is a neuroscientist, psychologist and trainer who combines three things that rarely come together. Firstly, she understands the technical foundations of AI, having worked with complex data analysis workflows throughout her career and trained neural networks herself, both in research and as a data scientist in industry. Secondly, she knows the academic system from the inside, with over a decade of doing interdisciplinary research on the human brain in Austria, the UK and Germany. And thirdly, she knows how to teach, with intensive training in didactics and coaching. Today she works as an Open Science officer at Leipzig University and as a freelance trainer; in both roles, she works to improve the quality and integrity of research. Her workshops are hands-on, interactive and adapted to the people in the room. They are usually commissioned by research institutions; this open workshop is a rare opportunity to join one directly.
